They have succeeded in the delivery of several projects which not only offer savings, but improve the management of medical devices ultimately leading to better patient care.


Recent projects include:

  • Analysis and subsequent management of external maintenance contracts yielding recurring savings of 25% on total maintenance costs per annum. Contracts are cancelled and the workload brought ‘in-house’ or they have their level of cover reduced. A proportion of the savings is ‘ring fenced’ as a contingency for major breakdowns.
  • Procedure changes through blood cell salvaging reducing the cost of blood products used during surgery.
  • Changing thermometry equipment, reducing costs of consumables and producing a Trust-wide standard process for temperature measuring.
  • Designing and implementing an Equipment Library.
  • Centralising of the ordering, storage and issue of consumable/durable items – yielding cost savings and reducing equipment downtime.
  • Ensuring compliance with the:
    • The Care Quality Commission (CQC) standard – Outcome 11
    • National Health Service Litigation Authority (NHSLA) risk management standards.


Reducing the amount of medical devices which are on an external maintenance contract opens the door to ‘People Development’ opportunities through increased training and the creation of new posts. It also reduces equipment downtime providing Trusts with an improved ‘on-site’ quality service.
